Synthetic Hair vs. Human Hair Extensions

by Georgina on Sep.25, 2009, under Hair Care

Synthetic Hair vs. Human Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can be made from either “real” 100% human hair or synthetic fibres that closely resemble real hair. Each type has its benefits and I will now attempt to address some of the pros and cons of each type:

Human Hair
Human hair is very versatile as it comes in a huge variety of colours and textures so there will almost certainly be a perfect match for every person out there looking for extensions. Because the hair is real, it can be processed in much the same way as the hair growing from your head i.e. it can be washed, blow-dried, straightened and tonged, without causing any serious damage. Certain hair can even be dyed which means you can change the colour of your extensions when you change the colour of your hair. Importantly, the general length of time human hair can be worn on the head is much greater than with synthetic hair; Remy hair for instance can be worn for up to a year and standard grade human hair for at least 2 months. However, the main concern for most shoppers, particularly during this recession, is that human hair is vastly more expensive that synthetic hair, often 3 to 4 times more in fact and the longer the human hair is that you are after, the more money you will have to part with. Therefore, if your weave or braid style is not intended to be worn for more than a week or two, human hair extensions are not very cost-effective. Nevertheless, the versatility of human hair and the ability to style and re-style the hair do make the high prices worth it in the long run.

Synthetic Hair
The majority of synthetic hair available on the market today is not heat-resistant and so does not offer the same versatility as human hair, neither can it be dyed. However, an increasing number of hair companies are making a new, advanced type of synthetic fibre that is heat resistant to temperatures of around 180°. Better still; the advanced fibres cost much the same as standard synthetic hair, so you can get some of the benefits of human hair at just a fraction of the cost, no matter what length you choose as there is no premium on synthetic hair over 14 inches unlike with human hair. Synthetic hair is almost always silky in texture and when new always has a natural shine without the need for products. However, some hair brands will often look quite plasticy, so be sure to check the hair over before you buy it.

Take care not to have hair on your neck when it is hot as your perspiration and the rubbing that will occur from you moving around will cause the synthetic hair to tangle or even matt if you are not careful. If possible, always tie your hair up on these days or choose a shorter style.

Finally, the most notable argument for using synthetic hair over human hair is that it is much better at retaining its shape; unlike human hair where the curls will drop after a short time if not maintained, synthetic fibres will keep their curly or wavy shape for much longer, even after being combed so there is no need to spend hours reshaping your style, you can just get up and go!

Artificial Hair Integrations

by Georgina on Sep.25, 2009, under Georginas, Hair Care

Artificial Hair Integrations

Georgina’s Bristol offers a wide selection of Artificial Hair Integrations made from either 100% human hair or synthetic fibre.

The human hair comes in two textures…
Silky or European texture and
Yaki or Yaky texture, which is closer to relaxed Afro hair.

The hair comes in a large selection of colours too; Georgina’s stocks a staggering 34 different shades in their European texture hair, so everybody should be able to find their perfect match.

What’s more, the hair can be treated much the same as your natural hair as it can withstand heat styling from blow dryers and straighteners and even be dyed should you change your hair colour whilst owning your extensions.

Human Hair Weft

The type of extensions Georgina’s sells are called weft extensions and there are several methods by which you can fit them. If fitting them at home, you require no professional training and can fit them cheaply and easily with either the clips or glue that are both readily available at all of Georgina’s stores. Instructions are provided with all purchases so you will know how to fit your extensions correctly, as well as how to remove them safely without causing too much damage to your natural hair.

Clipped-in hair should be worn on a day by day basis whereas bonded hair can be kept in place from just a few days to approximately a month.

However, should you feel you need something a little more permanent; Georgina’s also has a salon based at its largest branch on Stapleton Road where you can get a professional fitting, without glue, that will last you up to 8 weeks. This technique is called a weave and it is a procedure that Georgina’s salon specializes in. The method involves braiding the hair in canerows/cornrows against the head and the extension hair is then sewn onto the braids. The weave method is the least stressful to your hair available, and rather than causing any damage to the hair, it will actually promote growth whilst the braids are in place making it an excellent solution for those who may have weak or fine hair due to over-processing.

The Weave Method for Hair Extensions

by Georgina on Sep.25, 2009, under Hair Care

The Weave Method for Hair Extensions

Straight synthetic weave

Straight synthetic weave

Georgina’s method for artificial hair integrations is becoming increasingly popular with brides to be for their wedding day hairstyle. The weave method is safe and secure and will last up to 8 weeks if well maintained, even if you go swimming every day whilst on your honeymoon! The beauty of the weave is that is requires no glue and so the extensions will not fall out when you wash you hair or get it wet for any other reason. Because there is no glue, there is also no damage to the natural hair as bonds can weaken your hair and improper removal can result in hair being much finer than before the extensions were fitted – the last thing a beautiful new bride needs!

So you may be wondering how a weave works:

Curly synthetic weave

Curly synthetic weave

First of all, hair at the back of the head is braided flat against the scalp in what are called canerows/cornrows. This provides an anchor for the hair extensions to be attached to. The wefts then are sewn onto the braids in rows and about 5-6 rows should be sufficient to achieve a natural look.

Because at Georgina’s we use 100% human hair in our weaves, you can then go on to create an array of styles since the hair can be treated just like you natural hair i.e. it can be put in rollers or can be tonged and straightened to your heart’s content.

Natural synthetic weave

The added length and fullness that the hair extensions offer mean that you can achieve a fabulous up-do for your special day and still look just as glamorous for the following weeks whilst on your honeymoon, with very minimal up-keep. The extensions can be washed as normal hair would be. All that we recommend is that you buy a good quality serum for blow-drying and straightening as the extensions will sometimes get quite dry looking, particularly the blonde colours, and the oils from the serum will soon improve the look and feel of them.
